Mali in the Spotlight: Mieruba Ignites the Rudolstadt Festival 2025
From July 3 to 6, 2025, the Rudolstadt Festival — Germany’s largest folk music festival — shined a special light on Mali, honored as this year’s guest country. The event celebrated the richness of Malian music through a vibrant program and meaningful intercultural exchanges.

The Malian collective Mieruba played a central role at the festival, notably participating in a symposium dedicated to traditional Malian music. Four iconic instruments were highlighted: the Donso Ngoni, Kamalen Ngoni, Djeli Ngoni, and the Sokou. Artists, researchers, and enthusiasts explored their history, social role, and evolution — a powerful tribute to Mali’s musical heritage.
On July 4 and 5, Mieruba presented three major projects: Hunter Folk, Sahel Roots, and Malian Roots. The duo Hunter Folk, formed by Nfaly and Sinaly Diakité, thrilled audiences with an intense blend of contemporary folk and Manding traditions, creating unforgettable moments of musical sharing and intercultural connection. The German public was swept away by the energy and authenticity of the performance.
The acoustic concert Malian Roots, featuring Kankou Kouyaté and Barou Kouyaté, delivered a deeply emotional performance at the theater — a moment of pure tradition and musical beauty, warmly applauded by the audience.

Meanwhile, Adama Sidibé and Alassane Samaké led a vibrant workshop on the sokou and the calabash, further enriching the cultural and educational dimension of Mali’s presence at the festival.
This intense musical weekend not only showcased legendary artists and authentic rhythms but also strengthened cultural ties across borders.
