Adiara Traoré: A Rooted and Visionary Choreographer’s Journey

Adiara Traoré is a key figure on the contemporary dance scene in Mali. A passionate and committed dancer, she draws deep inspiration from Mandé traditional dances, blending them with modern movement languages to create a unique style—both deeply rooted and resolutely forward-looking. She trained at the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers Multimédia Balla Fasseké Kouyaté in Bamako and enriched her education with additional training at Donko Seko and the Irene Tassembédo Dance School (EDIT), developing an artistic practice that bridges African traditions and contemporary writing.

Born in Sikasso, Adiara grew up in an environment where music and dance were part of daily life. From an early age, she stood out for her grace, expressive power, and discipline. She began her professional training with masters of traditional dance, then expanded her skills through workshops and residencies in Africa and Europe, encountering various contemporary techniques. This dual training allowed her to develop a personal and sensitive choreographic language, which she has been refining for over ten years. She has collaborated with leading artists in African and international dance, including Amala Dianor, Bienvenue Bazié, Kettly Noël, Alesandra Seutin, Taoufiq Izeddiou, Nadia Beugré, and Alioune Diagne.

As a choreographer, Adiara Traoré explores social and identity-based themes such as the role of women, collective memory, migration, and resilience. Through her creations, she gives voice to often-silenced stories, placing dance at the heart of her artistic and civic engagement. She has presented her work at major international festivals, including Dense Bamako Danse, Danse Dialogue Africa (Germany), Fari Foni Waati, June Events (Paris), and the Marrakech Biennale. In 2014, she won the Orange Foundation Mali Prize in the Choreographer category for her piece “Elle est où la fille”, a powerful statement on societal expectations placed on women.

Adiara is also a dedicated educator, actively involved in sharing knowledge with younger generations through training workshops, masterclasses, and community projects. She works particularly with young people and deaf audiences as part of the project “Parole de corps”, which uses dance as a universal language of expression. She is also one of the dance trainers for the TranSformS initiative, implemented by Famu DANSE and Copier Coller with the support of the Stichting DOEN and LE FIL, a Malian artists’ cooperative. In 2022, she joined the SIGUIFIN project by the Amala Dianor Company, touring across Europe with performances at prestigious venues such as the Opéra de Paris, Suresnes Cités Danse, and festivals in Germany, Lithuania, Finland, Bulgaria, and the Netherlands.

Today, Adiara Traoré continues to dance, create, and teach with the same fervor. She is developing her own artistic projects, including the piece “AU CŒUR”, developed in residence at the Institut Français du Mali with support from Copier Coller. Her journey reflects the vitality and richness of contemporary Malian dance—where tradition meets modernity, body meets voice, and movement meets activism.
