2nd Edition of the Nianan Ag’na Ceremony

It was in a festive and engaged atmosphere that the 2nd edition of the Nianan Ag’na ceremony took place, celebrating the talent of Malian, African, and diasporic filmmakers. More than just an awards event, this ceremony is an artistic and cultural manifesto, placing cinema at the heart of issues of memory and identity.

A Meeting Between Creation and Transmission

Organized as part of the Ag’na Festival, this year’s ceremony focused on the theme: “Cinema and the Management of Cultural Heritage”. A strong choice, in a context where both tangible and intangible African heritages face increasing threats. The selected films, through their aesthetics and narratives, echoed the voices of the past while questioning our present.

The Spotlight on the African New Generation

Among the competing works, “BANDJÔ AN ON” by director Alhassane Baldé caught the attention of both the audience and the jury. This poignant short film advocates for the right to education for children, blending social storytelling and visual poetry. It represents the new wave of filmmakers who use cinema as a lever for change and raising awareness.

Beyond the Trophies, a Platform for Reflection

The ceremony was only the opening of a larger program: screenings took place from April 5 to 9 in Bamako, at the Walaha group premises, and concluded with a major cultural closing in Koulikoro from April 10 to 12. This cinematic journey allowed a wide audience, both young and old, to discover impactful films and engage in discussions on the themes addressed.

A Tribute to Rooted Cinema

The Nianans, traditional keepers of memory in some Malian cultures, give their name to this ceremony which, through images, seeks to preserve the essence of who we are. Because telling stories is also about building the future.
